Knowing the mine of information out there, I would be very grateful for personal recommendations for sharpening tools for shears and instructions of how to sharpen spades, lawn edging tools, etc.  I saw the very useful info about Tools Shed for recycling old tools and will bear that in mind.  But I want to keep mine if I can and save pennies!  Thank you!

First port of call: youtube. Go to www.youtube.com and enter in the search box 'how to sharpen garden tools'. It will give you a list of short videos on sharpening a range of different garden tools. As I'm gardening for a living I use my Felco secateurs a lot, and every couple of years or so I send them away to be serviced. The blade is replaced, and the handgrips if necessary, and the whole tool is returned to me as clean and good as new. This seems like good value to me at £15 (last year). The company who do this are Burton McCall in Leicester. But you'll find useful videos about sharpening your secateurs yourself on youtube.

I agree with the previous member.  To answer such a question, would take pages and pages of words.  You Tube will show you how.

    All the best.

I am a Blacksmith in Sussex and i have people bringing tool in for re sharpening and for putting on new handles. So if you have a local Blacksmith take your tools to him. Another great tip for making your tools last longer is to oil the handles with linceed oil at the end of each season. i still have and use my grandads spades and fork. these are at least 65 years old and as strong as ever.
