I live in a Regency house (we think 1830s or 1840s) and would love to know more about what plants and designs would have been contemporary when the house was built, to inspire me to re-do the (small, square, west-facing) front garden. Would be very grateful for any tips or ideas! Thank you.

Welcome to the forum... I work for English Heritage at Brodsworth Hall, South Yorkshire. The gardens were done in the 1860s in the Victorian Era.... Gardens of the day were often very formal and symmetrical... They were also very big on evergreens like holly, yew, viburnum, box which were always very well groomed in to perfect hedges and topiary... Very large architectural plants and a vast array of Conifers were often utilised. Monkey Puzzle was very popular and having a Califonian Redwood in your garden was a huge status symbol of the upper classes... Suppose its a bit like driving around in a Bentley these days to show off.... Alpine gardening was also very popular as were roses, especially the fragrant Portland roses... Ferns and Tree Ferns were also popular, as were ornamental trees like Arbutus and the Chinese Prunus varieties... I have provided a few links you might find interesting below. Copy and paste them into your browser... One of them is a nursery which specialises in plants of the Victorian Era.. Good luck, would love to see some photo's of your house, love old properties...
