I have just planted two new rhubarb crowns on my allotment and find that something is eating the leaves.  Any idea what's doing this and is there any way in which I can protect these new plants?

I don't think you should worry too much about the leaves, they die down at this time of year anyway. Make sure you cover the crowns with some compost and perhaps straw or braken over winter. They will almost certainly be fine next spring. Remember that in the first year be spareing with pulling to allow the plants to establish.
