Hi, I have a bay tree which has numerous brown flat insects/parsites/ growths on the leaves. They are appox 3 to 5mm long, 2 to 3mm wide. They appear to being feeding off the leaves.

Has anyone any idea what they are and also how to remove them?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Like t'other Sue, It sounds like scale insect to me.  Bay trees are prone to scale insect infestation.  You can use an insecticide but you may not be able to use the leaves in cooking afterwards - best look at bottle for advice.
