    I'm somewhat devastated this morning.

When I looked at my front garden (and my neighbour's garden which I look after) Monday morning I saw that someone had cut some hollyhocks from both gardens - annoying, esp as they took the seedheads from which I take seeds to plant for next year's plants - but only 3 stems so not too bad.

This morning I see they pulled out my best sunflowers (in the front in the first pic below from July before they bloomed - they took longer to bloom but were spectacular - I had people stopping to take pics of the garden it looked so nice).

This is them now. Some pulled out of the ground and this one just left like this.

Has anyone else had this sort of thing happen? What can we do to protect our front gardens? Not a lot I imagine :(

Oh no Julie, what a nasty wanton act of destructionAngry The only things I can think of is to put either a movement sensor spotlight outside (we've got one, its really effective), or a more expensive solution is to install CCTV.

A few years ago I planted up the garden in front of the offices of an environmental charity organisation. I put in shrubs, including a nice large fig, some roses and herbaceous perennials, most of which had been gifts. The gardens were behind a good metal fence 2 mtrs high, and the gates locked. - The weekend after the job was completed, the whole lot were stolen !!

    Oh, what a shame!

A sensor light might help discourage this from happening again, but I don't think there's a foolproof answer.

Have you reported this to the police? I know it's not exactly a serious crime, but if there's a local pattern of nuiscance behaviour there may be something they can do.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

    Alex, that's awful!

Something really weird happened yesterday. I was walking through a small park on the way home and found my plants discarded there. Why did they pull them up just to throw them away!?! And if they just wanted to vandalise why did they take them there? Why not discard them somewhere closer?

I did report it to the police and they were sympathetic but not sure they'll do much. They said they'd check the cameras nearby but I had to give them a small time frame to check when I think it happened, ie they won't go through hours and hours of footage for it.

Yes, such type of things happen in my garden too. The security of garden is important and for that fencing is the better option. After that incident, fencing has been done in my garden. It prevents it from harmful animals as well as human intruders.

These people who do this kind of thing are usually chavs or some such and giving them a good hiding should sort them out, if you can ever find out who they are that is,I once had all my tulips stamped on during the night, some folk are just ignorant and very jealous.

There was something on last week's GQT about foxes digging up and moving plants. It got me thinking, maybe these plants were pulled up by foxes and moved by them without any human intervention. I'll never know for sure but it is possible.
