I'm looking at buying a new house which has a lovely big garden, but it's been neglected for years and is covered in ground elder.  I'd thought of spraying it all with glyphosate weedkiller and then covering the whole area with black polythene for a year or so.  Another possiblilty might be to get a pig to do the dirty work for me - the garden is well walled and secure, although I do have small children - how about a  pet pig?  Eventually part of the garden will be lawn and part veg patch, with chickens elsewhere.

I'd really appreciate any advice or ideas,

    Thanks a lot!

    Hello jangle,

glyphosate will do a reasonable job on ground elder, though you may need more than one application - the black polythene shouldn't be necessary.  Alternatively the pig would work well, if you could accomodate one.  I know of a large garden that was completely overgrown, including by mature trees, and which was totally cleared by a small herd of pigs!

You might be able to borrow some pigs from a local farmer.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.
