Hi Wendy, welcome to the forums! Short answer: I wouldn't bother. Longer answer: I can recall my grandmother telling me that a healthy rose should be pruned late, in early spring, while a sick rose should be pruned early (and usually brutally!), in October-November. However, I think that her reason for leaving the pruning a little late was that she wanted her roses looking nice for as long a possible. By pruning just before they regrow in spring, she cut down the time that they spent looking sparse. Have fun! Ed

Ideally, I prune climbers and ramblers in late summer/early autumn. Others I prune in January or February or March, whenever convenient. I've pruned quite a lot of roses already this year. It doesn't seem to me to make much difference exactly when I do it. Leaving it later means new growth gets going later, and first flowering is also likely to be later, although the weather plays its part. What do others think?
