It is my parents' Ruby Wedding Anniversary this month; I know they want an evergreen tree suitable for a container: I should appreciate any ideas.

Hi Sally, I received a beautiful camellia for my birthday this year, it was from a website called (I think) 'Plants for Presents' or something similar - they have a great selection of plant-type gifts on there. I can't plant the camellia in my garden (wrong type of soil). I'm sure they would be able to advise you what plants are good to permanently stay in pots. Good luck in your search.

I know it's not a tree but black bamboo looks lovely and is great in a tub. The tub will need to be fairly wide thopugh to give it some room. I was chatting with my favourite flower shop (the Mills In Bloom florist Southampton), and they were saying that acers are good, although not evergreen. They have lovely shaped leaves and come in shades of beautiful green or purple. Maybe a ruby coloured leaf would be appropriate...

Hi My hubby and I have just celebrated our Ruby Wedding and we were given Rosa Ruby Wedding and also a Clematis Ruby Wedding. The rose is in a very large pot as I have nowhere suitable in the garden and the clematis is merrily climbing the fence. Both have buds on now and are ready to open.

Bay trees are a classic & love being in a pot as long as they are fed in summer. Most coniferous evergreens aren't ideal for pots (they are prone to getting girdled roots and strangling themselves, not a great marriage metaphor!) Arbutus unedo has red berries and does ok in a big pot, while Photinia Red Robin has red young stems & leaves and should also be fine in a large pot. Ed
