I wondered if anyone has any comments about proffessional Garden Design Courses?  I believe there is a year's Diploma at Merrist Wood - has anyone any experience of this and/or suggestions/recommendations for any other courses?

    Thank you

I did a correspondence course with The Horticultural Correspondence College - www.hccollege.co.uk - can't recommend them highly enough. As well as a horticulturalist and hands on gardener, I work very successfully as a garden designer. Good luck in whatever you decide.

     Hi,

The Society of Garden Designers publishes a 'How to choose a Garden Design course'  that you should be able access at: http://www.sgd.org.uk/student_green/Choose_Course.aspx or by visiting www.sgd.org.uk and navigating to the student area.  The SGD also runs local cluster groups to support designers and student designers.  If you contact the SGD they should be able to put you in contact with your area organiser, and then in tough with designers who have studied at colleges in your area.  Garden design is a wide ranging profession - a good grounding in design, horticulture, construction and business are all a good idea.

    Hope that helps, good luck.

    Helen

I did a short course with Duncan Heather, who runs the Oxford College of Garden Design, and found it quite inspirational. The short course was very intense indeed, though I enjoyed every moment of it. I believe the long course is also very hard work but, going on the student show I visited, you certainly get a lot out of it.

There are a number of educational sites which list course providers; one my favourites is Emagister (http://www.emagister.co.uk/) and Lantra is good for the horticultural industry in particular (including garden design): http://www.lantracoursefinder.co.uk/
