Hi Questions from a novice vegetable gardener. We are planning to put in raised beds in an area of garden that is at present all lawn. My question is can we just put them straight onto the grass or should that all be dug up first? Also what is the best soil combination to use - we have plenty of our own compost but should we mix that with top soil?

You will only get out of a garden what you put into it.

I believe the best way, would be to dig it over and incorporate all manner of goodies, compost, well rotted manure etc.  After all you may never have to dig it again so once really does make it worthwhile I'd say.

Yes, you can put your raised beds directly on top of your lawn but the grass will more than likely find its way up to the surface and you'll end up with a raised lawn Hmm

Skim off the turf and turn it over in the bottom of your digging trench, that way the amount of regrowth will be minimal  and certainly controllable.

There is no such thing as useless - you can always be a bad example.
