Hi there,
I live in North Vancouver, BC Canada. Here on the west coast of Canada we have had a very long, warm, dry summer which is still continuing. I noticed about a 3 weeks ago that my 1 year old Acer was looking "stressed". The leaves are curling, are very dry and are falling off. The branches are still flexible and I believe the tree is still alive. It is situated on the north side of my house and receives moderate amounts of sun. I thought I was keeping it well watered through the summer, but perhaps not? I don't see any bugs or apparent fungal disease.
Any thoughts? Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

Is it exposed to windy conditions Patricia?

Not really. It is in the NW corner of our front garden with a large evergreen laurel hedge on the west side of it . I have some photos but I am not sure how to use the add photos/images.... I wonder if it just got too much sun and since it is so young it just couldn't handle it???

It probably is leaf scorch from strong sun, I would think Patricia. Acers generally prefer dappled sun and shelter from strong winds to prevent scorch or wind burn. The RHS advice mentions it:-

Why not take your trowel and check if the soil is moist round the roots - if not water it. If moist check that the bark at soil level is sound, if dead and rotted it is a goner, if sound check that the roots are only just below soil level - if too deep lift and replant. If the roots are not growing out from the original root ball lift and replant after teasing out roots. While doing that check the root ball is alive and not full of dark rotted roots - if dead and rotted it is a goner again. If sound it should come back next spring. Good luck.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my query. I think it is leaf scorch. I am sad that I won't be seeing the beautiful red leaves this fall. I don't really want to move it, but it looks as if it might be a possibilty.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my query. The roots look fairly moist and there is no sign of rot. I am going to hope for the best and wait and see how it looks in the spring.
