Hello Pat.  For some reason the link to reply to your message didn't work so I hope this finds you.The picture you need is in this album:-

When we had the terrace laid I asked for the footings to be extended a bit further to allow for the bottle wall.  We then put down a layer of dry cement mix into which we pushed the bottom layer of bottles, making sure they were level.   Each row of bottles was simply laid on top with no extra cement and just an end wall of cobbles to hold them in place.  The final layer - at knee height - was finished with cement onto which I laid old marble slabs for seating.

The wall has stood for 12 years now without moving and in temperatures ranging from -32C to +38C.  All I have to do is hose it down occasionally to remove dust and cobwebs.  Straight sided bottles with high shoulders work best.

That bottle wall looks lovely and colourful, very unusual and different Obelix-you must have been very happy getting through all those bottles of wine to be able to build a wall like that!Big Smile

It took a few months of dedication and we had help from friends because at the time there were no bottle banks and Oz and Kiwi bottles weren't taken back by shops for recycling.   Happy days.

P Thank you so very much, Obelix!  That photo, and the reiteration of your methods, re-inspires me.  My "contractors" are my 40-something sons, so this will go to them very quickly.  Mid-winter projects are the way we fight off the blues from day after day of cloudy weather with occasional spurts of rain.  Now i have to dream and lay out the plans.  Thank you very much.  I'll post a photo of my hasty wall and let you know where it is. ~

Glad you got the info Pat.  I'll be interested in the results, especially as I have an old gardening friend who's recently retired home from Belgium to Kingston, just up the road from you.
