I would leave at least a metre - and even then would not be optimistic about the border. You will find that the roots of the trees take most of the moisture and nutrients. If at all possible, I would try somewhere else. If that is not an option, cut back the conifers on your side, and select plants for dry, arid conditions.

Having cut back the conifers on your side you could always dig out the roots on your side as well.  That would give your plants a much better chance to thrive.

There is no such thing as useless - you can always be a bad example.
