So- I've decided. I'm going to do the RHS L2 with HCC.
I plan on taking the exams next summer.
How many hours per week should I set aside?
Will I have time to also study an AS level by distance learning, too?

Well, as a recently qualified L2 person, I can tell you that I spent 3 hours a week at lectures, and then another 1-2 hours re-reading the subject taught. Then in the run up to exams (about 4 weeks beforehand) I revised for 90 minutes a day.
My tutor reckoned it was the same as a gcse, but (as someone who has taken gcse's, a-levels and a science degree) I'd reckon it's more of an a-level status. an as-level at the same time is plausible, but I s'pose it depends on the as-level you'd be taking and how much coursework is involved.

oh, and I'd definitely recommend you take paper 1 in February, and paper 2 in June. That way you are only revising for one paper at a time.

Does the course teach you in order? For example, if I did take the Module 1 exam Feb would the first part of the course cover this exam?
I was told by a college that it is not taught in order.....?

I spent one day a week in the classroom and studied most other days for at least an hour. I revised very intensely for about six weeks before the exams, but that was a few years ago when the course was shorter and the exams were taken in one day. Same here, edenhendry. Having studied at gcse, a-level and degree level, I also thought it was more a-level status, but that could also depend on the teaching standard you get and how much the lecturer pushes you.

Well, I suppose it depends where you study, but my college goes therough the syllabus in order, teaching the 1st half of the syllabus up until the February exams. Then the Hort 1 paper is taken. Then we spend the remainder of the course studying the 2nd half of the syllabus and then taking the Hort 2 paper in June.
It also means that if you didn't get the mark you wanted in the Feb exam, you have an opportunity to re-take in the June exams.

Hi I am from the HCC our course is set out so that you can take the exams independently. The course is split into 10 lessons, Lesson 1 - 5 make up Hort 1 and L6 - 10 Hort 2 therefore you can complete the first 5 lessons and sit the part one exam and then carry on and complete the last 5 lessons and sit the part two exam - this is what I did and passed with commendation!
