Aldi just isnt cheap enough any more so ive decided to grow my own veg. One small problem, i have absolutly NO idea what im doing!! I've got my little radishes in big pots and they seem to be doing somthing, but how do you know when they are ready??? I realise i sound like a complete veg virgin but we all have to start somewere. Thinking of up grading to butternut squash if the radishes work!!!

Depending on the cultivar of radish you should see the root growing above the ground when they are big enough to pull and eat.

Thankyou. I just presumed they grew under ground.

They do, but you will probably just be able to see the tops. I think it might be too late to sow squash seeds now, but there are plenty of things you can grow. Do you have a garden, or will everything go in pots?
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

I do have a garden but it is small, so ill be growing things in pots and a large trough, which is currently housing potatoes. They are doing well and the first crop were delicious. I was quite impressed for my first attempt.

Salad leaves are a good thing to grow in pots - one pack of mixed seed will last for ages as you just need to sow a pinch at a time every few weeks to have a regular supply.
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

Hi Phot's Moll and all, My wife had a free packet of mixed salad seeds this year from Lakeland and I planted them all at once! in a window box.I wish I had planted them each week now as you andsuggest. The were planted too thickly the rocket leaves flowered and bolted quickly but the other leaves were great. We did eat some of the rocket leaves although the stems were a bit on the tough side. I had planted other lettuce at the same time (Lollo Rosso) from seeds I had left from last year so we have not been short. I am going to try Cos or little gem next as I have not tried growing them beforeit will be something different. PS I was reading your blog the other day - you certainly keep yourself very busy!
