I have lots of beetles that I don't remember seeing in previousyears. They're the same size and shape as a lilly beetle, but are much less brightly coloured - a kind of brown with a hint of red. They're not eating my lillies or any other plants as far as I can see. Any idea what they might be?

Ah, that would explain why they've suddenly appeared on the lottie - the long grass around the edges has been cut down.

I'm not sure what they eat but I don't think it's anything we need,i fished one out of the water tub the other day, on my lottie I have tiny crickets all hopping around, so I keep some grass near the hedge long for them.

Are they cardinal beetles, Phot's? There's a page here: http://www.plantpress.com/wildlife/o250-redheadedcardinalbeetle.php

They don't eat plants but other insects, though I don't know which sort.

That could be them. I'll have a closer look, Miranda and see if they match the picture.

They seemed to be hungrily eyeing the aphids, but that may have been wishful thinking.
