Is it possible to lay turf over new screened topsoil, then lay a membrane, either autoway 90 or plantex over it, cover with sharp sand and lay turf on this?  I have reservations on this estimate, advice please. Jill...Norfolk

Your reservations sound about right Jill, I wouldn't bother with the membrane as the turf will need to root directly into the soil.  A membrane might stop weeds coming up from underground but it won't be any help in stopping weed seeds being blown in with the wind or from birds and taking root.  My lawn is getting more clover in it each year and to be honest, it's more green than the actual grass itself and I love to see the bees on the clover.

Thank you Sue for your reassurance.  It seems pointless having decent soil shot that will never see a root grow into it. Jill
