I have just witnessed strange spectacle outside our kitchen window. My attention was drawn to a row of sparrows on the fence and I was thinking how cute they were when a weasel appeared seemingly playing, weaving in and out of the pots (a bit like a Crufts competitor) at the foot of the same fence. After watching them for a while there appeared to be some kind of standoff between them because when the sparrows moved further along the fence so did the weasel. I watched them for some time until I came to the conclusion that the weasel had an eye for a feathery comestible of the sparrow variety. Have any of you witnessed this sort of behaviour? I wish I'd had the time to get my camcorder in order to record this rather odd scene.

I've never seen a weasel Roundelder.  There's plenty of cats around this area that would do the same though.

It's typical though that the camera/camcorder isn't at hand when you want it, that's happened to me a few times.

I have been told that weasels will make a gymnastic display to entice over-curious birds into striking range - I was sceptical but it seems there was truth in the story.

That's amazing, Roundelder. You're very lucky to have seen it! I've never seen that before.

Right, I have now uploaded some pics of the weasel incident for your perusal should you actually want to peruse. Sue1002, as you can see I did have cameras but it would have been superb on video! Boggy, I think the pictures definitely add credence to what you said. If you look carefully (link below) you can see a number of birds that have come down from the fence (on to the pebbles) to get a better look at what was going on...entrapment if ever I saw it!

    Anyway, the pictures:

I have put the rest of the pictures on photobucket in their full size so they can be zoomed in fairly closely (I hope)

What great pictures, Roundelder, and what a beautiful creature that weasel is. I'm envious of you seeing that!
