We have a Chinese Red Birch (Betula Albosinensis Fascination). We planted it two years ago and it's approximately 18' high.

This spring, it has developed a large number of "catkins", which are causing the branches to droop heavily. A number of the smaller branches have broken off in the wind. We have a fairly windy garden.

Is this normal? Does the tree normally produce "catkins" at this time of year? Should I remove some of the "catkins" to reduce the load on the branches?

We'd be grateful for any advice.

    Thanks

    Stephen Cook

P.S. Are they called "Catkins" on this type of tree?

Birches do tend to shed a lot of twigs naturally - are sure it is not just natural shedding? Boggy
