I have considerable success every year growing two tomato plants in a Grow-Bag on a layer of gravel which I keep wet. I am never sure whether it is OK to just put the feeding solution into the gravel, or whether (as I always have done) to water it directly into the bag (which can be a bit of a fiddle, as the hole the plant emerges from is fairly small). Indeed, does it matter? The Grow-Bag has holes in the bottom for the roots, and this is in my conservatory. The variety is Alicante, which is greenback-resistant - control of shade and temperature is not as easy in a conservatory as in a proper greenhouse! My numerous sundews and butterworts keep the pests at bay!!

I am told that the feeder roots are at the very bottom of the tomato plant so i guess feeding them into the gravel is okay, that said the depth of soil in a gro bag is minimal so i would think it doesn't matter too much in this case

    Hi digger

Sorry I have not replied before - hard disk failure which has rather consumed my time over the last week or more! I did get your reply, and thanks very much indeed. Am now adding feed to the tray water the Grow-Bag is on (will blame you if no eatable fruits <g> ) The plants are looking good in fact, apart from magnesium deficiency which I battle against every year - am going to post a separate message when I get a moment

I am told that things like magnesium and other trace elements can be rendered un useable by the plants if they are over fed with too mush pottasium?
