I have just lost a 14 year old prunus standing in a prominent position in the lawn. My soil is alkaline, seems ok in the summer but is waterlogged in winter. I think the tree's roots have probably rotted. I would like to replace this with another tree. The height is not critical but I don't want it to be too wide. I would like a tree that looks good preferably in all seasons but don't mind whether it is deciduous but it must be able to cope with the wet. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Depending on how waterlogged? If it's really wet the two trees that come to mind are Alder (Alnus) or Willow (Salix) varieties. If you can improve the drainage then possibly a Mountain Ash such as Sorbus 'Joseph Rock' - does OK in my clay soil which can get quite sticky in winter. oldhippy

Dawn Redwood (Metasequioa glyptostroboides) grows in that condition. It has a nice autumn colour (its decidous), bright green spring leaves and a beautiful bark as extra bonus Fast growing, it is is said to reach some 40m. It has a conical habit more or less. Here it thrives in 7.5 pH.

Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) is another decidous flood tolerant conifer, renowned for developing 'cypress knees' in really waterlogged places. It comes from the south eastern US, so might not like your alkaline soil.
