hi guys - i am amazed that you, of all people, have been so slow at discussing the pea trials - on your own forums i am a member of : www.growveg.info and we don't just have a single thread discussing the trials, we have a whole forum dedicated to them - for our members to discuss the progress, compile data charts and post lots of pics etc here is the link - just in case any of you are curious http://www.growveg.info/viewforum.php?f=4176
we have a high resoluition gallery facility too - just as well - because our members really enjoy posting pics why not pop on over and have a look at what we have to say - and join in with the banter - you would all be more than welcome

Hi, I also received my seeds yesterday, and have planted out. One thing that noone has mentioned, and wasn't in the literature, was whether or not these are climbers or not. I am a newbie to veg gardening, in my third year, so hope I'm not missing the obvious. I've got all mine planted out with something to climb on.. Heres hoping for a lovely crop. Anyone know if mange tout and sugar snaps can be frozen?

Hi jonnykid, it does say on the instructions that the 'Oregon Sugar Pod' will grow up to 90cm (3ft) and the 'Sugar Ann' will grow up to 1.5m (5ft) and to support them with netting or twiggy branches. I have frozen mangetout before and they freeze very well but I've not grown sugar snaps before and haven't tried freezing any yet.

I planted my seeds last Monday the 20th April, directly into the ground as suggested, I have grown peas and mange tout before but always started them of in either pots or more recently guttering, and planted out when the plants are about 3" high. My main problem is staking them, I dont have enough tall twiggy sticks from the garden and don't seem to be able to buy peas sticks anywhere. The Mange Tout grew to at least 5foot last year and got very heavy at the top and where prone to topple over. I have some already starting this year (not the trial ones) and am trying to grow them up chicken wire, put on a frame. if anyone has any tried and tested solution i would love to give it a try.

I just buy the cheap tall bamboo canes and tie them together at the top, then drape nets over them.

Do you mean a bit like a short runner bean type frame , but put the netting over for them to scramble up.

I'm planning to sow some tomorrow. I've decided to do several very short rows over the year so I have a small supply over a longer period. I intend to use plastic netting (because I found some in the shed) which I thought I'd hold up with bamboo sticks in a row - I hadn't thought of having them as wigwams.
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

Hi,
I am confused I received my peas while off sick from work. I was then on holiday and as I had registered for the trial while at work never received the email containing the trial recording sheet until I returned to work.
While on holiday I read the back of the seed packets which said that Oregon Sugar Pod grows to a height of 90cm(36ins) and Sugar Ann grows to 70cm (28ins). I sowed the seeds a per the instructions on the packet. Then I read the recording sheet on my return to work and realised that I had sown them under my low supports.
I have now sown the peas on the correct height support if I follow the recording sheet instructions.
I hope I have it right this time

That's a very interesting question indeed Dragonfly, I've got to admit that I read the instructions off the email but didn't read the backs of the packets. Another question I thought of (which is probably thinking too far ahead at the moment) is when we have to provide the information of how much you get from one plant - do we pick one plant at random and weigh what that plant produces or do we weigh the whole lot and divide that amount by the number of plants we have?

Sue1002, in the past when i have grown peas or mange toute it would be hard to find where one plant started and another one finished. maybe i have planted too close together in the past. i followed the instruction from the pea trial and the seeds have been planted 1 1/2 to 2" apart, i have yet to stake them, but if i use either the chicken wire or sticks i think they will scramble together, it will be interesting to find out.

That's a very good point there Littleacorn, perhaps it will be easier to roughly count how many seedlings have come up while we can before they get too big and use that figure with our calculations - I think that's how I will do it. I've got quite a few gaps in the sugarsnap row and have sown some more seeds in them. I've also sown a windowbox of each variety today which will stay on the ground to see how they do.

Unfortunately I was a bit later than you Sue1002 in sowing my seeds, so as yet don't know if I've got any gaps. Yes to the the others who've asked - I tie the bamboo canes at the top in a wig-wam fashion then drape over the netting. I just hope the canes I've used are going to be tall enough, reading the latest mail we've had from the RHS re the pea trial. I am going to sow some more over the next few days and may build something higher again with a more 'solid' chicken wire trellis!
