Hi, Have ordered 20 Lawson Cypress trees to hopefully
make a hedge and windbreak. They are being delivered at a size of
35-40cm. The area I am trying to cover is a length of garden about 15
metres long and has a stone wall along it. Am hoping to have them quite
compact together to make a barrier and so I can keep it really neat in
future. So my question is, how far apart do I plant them and how far
away from the wall? Should I dig a channel and plant them along it or
should I just dig individual holes for each one? One of my
concerns is saving myself from having to trim grass from around the
bottom of them in future so would I be able to put bark down or
something to keep the grass and weeds at bay? And any other advice
would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

OK, now that I have discovered how to add pics, here is a picture of the wall along which the Lawson Cypress will go. http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs022.snc1/2645_62964454772_679449772_1599097_2106573_n.jpg I know the garden is a mess but also we have inerited this and are trying over the course of the next year or so to make it into something nice :-)

One every 50cm should be fine - further apart they don't compete and get rather large and vigorous.
If the trees in the background cast shade you might consider holly as being more shade tolerant.
