I haven't yet, digger, but we do have some candles, so I'll go and put on in the freezer right away.

People this chilling candle trick definately works, ding a candle in the freezer and then compare it's burn rate to an unfrozen one,

    Digger et al,

I`ve been looking back over some previous tips and found the thread about putting the candle in the freezer.
Sure, it will last longer if it`s colder but it will give less light! Did you also consider the extra energy used in opening the freezer door to put the candle in?

Excellent point, Roger. I don't think Digger properly thought it through. Here's a good one that actually works ...

Instead of buying an expensive address book, just wait until the phone book is delivered and cross out the names of everyone you don't know.

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

    Digger, Phots, Suzie, et al,

Better still, tear out the pages and add them to your compost heap. Saves ink too!
Together we could do great things for the planet.

On a more serious note - how come I got jet black runner beans from my crop in 2007 and they were still jet black on last years crop? And then some white ones too which look just like Butter Beans?
I looked on google and found that an old variety called Black Magic were identical. Were the bean plants I had been given down the allotment 5 years ago a result of a cross of Black Magic and Butter Beans that produced the mottled mauve ones we see today?
Anyway, the black ones are really productive and resistant to anything thrown at them. I`ve saved quite a few of black and white ones if anybody wants to try them.

Only put candles in or out of the freezer if you're going in there anyway, however stick em outside at the moment and they will freeze okay, the phone book is a good un Phot's. Now then here is a proper tip that will save lots of money.

when you are out in town and you need transport home and you can't drive, either because you're drunk or you don't have a car and it's not appropriate to wait for the bus etc... Get the telephone number of the nearest pizza delivery place, ring them from around the corner and order some sort of pizza to be delivered home, then wait for ten minutes around tha corner from the pizza place and a chap will emerge with your hot fresh pizza in a bag, then approach the pizza chap and ask is that pizza going to such an address and he will say yes (if it's your pizza) then you say give us a lift home with the pizza, he's taking it to your house anyway and so offer him ten bob to take you with the pizza, if he says no way, tell him there is no one in to pay for the delivery of the pizza, this works a treat and is far cheaper than getting a taxi and you get a nice pizza to eat as well.

Thats alright if they have a car, but around here the pizza delivery guys have these tiny little scooters or motorbikes.  Dont fancy a trip on one of those.

Those black beans - from time to time white and mottled runner beams throw black seeds. In times past these have been grown on to produce black seeded cultivars, Black magic is one I had not heard of, but Jet Black is another cultivar. Unlike white seeded cultivars the black ones have never really caught on. White seeded ones are favoured by supermarkets as the skin finish is smoother and certain ones flower well under artificial long days in Kenya (incandescent lamps shine at night to fool the plants into thinking the days are long, when of course they are not when near the equator. I hope you make a black seeded cultivar that brings you fame and wealth. Boggy

    Thanks Boggy,
So there are all sorts of black beans!
I actually sowed a load of mine today and popped them in the shed propagator (frosts forecast for tonight!). I don`t know what sort of black beans they are yet but I`ll let you know how they grow this year.
I am going to sow the white beans on a separate part of the plot to get a better comparison with the black ones.

    Regards, Roger H.
