Does anyone know whether it's ok to put moss in compost?  My lawn is more moss than grass and it seems a waste just to dispose of the moss when I rake the lawn, but my gut feeling is that moss won't compost well.  If it won't go in with usual household/garden compost, is there anything else I can do with it?

You could use it to line hanging baskets.

I put moss in my compost heap and it rots down OK. As with anything, don't put a lot in on its own - mix it with other stuff (I use shredded paper)

We have inherited two compost bins full of moss/grass cuttings. They have been 'rotting' for over TWO years. We began to dig out the compost from the bottom of the bins: but when we found the moss and laid it out on a ledge it became green within a day. Clearly it had not died! or rotted! I am very concerned that if I use this compost I'll be adding moss to the flower beds, and may live to regret it [does it grow all over the beds?] so we dug out all the contents of the two bins and took it to the re-cycling. However, we still have a mossy lawn - bright sunlight, not shaded, so it must be poor drainage. Any thoughts on the effect of 'composted' moss ?
