The stuff I buy has lots of wheat in too, but the pigeons scoff it all (I like pigeons except when they eat my purple sprouting)

Perhaps you could buy seperate seeds, such as sunflower and millet and mix your own?

Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

What a great web-site - Foxn' the cardinal sounds are wonderful! I'm gonna store that site for future reference - thanxYes

The RSPB sell all manner of seed Phot's, that you can either buy separately or have ready made mixes. NONE of our seeds go to waste, the greedy blighters scoff the lot. Which is why I buy the 12.75kg sacks of feeder mix, and HURRAY, the replacement order finally turned up today Sue1002!

I noticed the nyger feeder was empty and as I've never seen birds on it, guessed the seeds had fallen out. I refilled it anyway ... When I got to work, my OH had already e-mailed me a picture of two goldfinches on the feeder! He said there were 14 of them in the garden on teazles, verbena and the nyger seed.

Wow--14 birds around!!  We don't see that many, I guess, because I'm at work!!  Should get a webcast set up to see all the hank-panky going on during the day in the garden!!  You are doing it right, Phot's.  I don't know about the fat balls you guys are talking about, but I will look into them.  Sometimes the bird feeder gets empty quickly, and I suspect squirrels know how to milk it.  One time I came outside and caught a squirrel hanging on the edge!!

Glad you liked the birdsong site, Susiq.  I have been looking up your birds, also, to see what they are like.

Yes, I'll try and post up the picture OH sent me - that only had two on, but they're very cute. I've asked him to take more photos whenever he sees lots of birds - lucky git is mostly working from home at the moment.

ha ha ha - alright for some eh Phots?! I managed to get a picture of the woodpecker yesterday, trouble is I had to take the piccy from inside the front room, even if I move in there, he's off! I can magnify the piccy on the camera but don't know if I can download it in the 'bigger but less clear size' - will have a play around and see if I can do it - watch this space!!

Did you see the new bird camera?  I came across it on the web today!!  $240.  That's a lot for birdwatching, though...

    It's at:  http://www.wingscapes.com

Taking birdwatching to the next level.....It could be used in the stables and the cookie jar area, as well.  Wink! Wink!!

They look even better swaying about on the ends of the verbena, but obviously they're harder to photograph when they do that!

Lovely close-up!!  Those are colorful birdies, Phot's.  It's dark when I leave for work and return home, so only on a weekend if I can sit and watch, I hope to catch some.  I just put the bird feeder out now as they have plenty of nut and berry trees for food sources at this time of year.  Jan & Feb. are the hungry bird months here.

We've got loads of birds in the garden this morning, starlings, bluetits, a pair of chaffinch (seen the male one before but today is the first time I've seen the female one), house sparrows and our robin is back.

I was watching the birds here today and noticed that for the first time ever, both house sparrows and bluetits are feeding on the fat balls, the seed only feeders which they usually feed from are not being touched.
