Hi all, is anyone else besides me going to admit to talking to their plants? I know quite a few gardeners do so I guess I won't be the only one here :) But who else gives some of their plants pet names. I just posted a picture on another thread of Barry Banana . He's such a presence in the room I feel obliged to acknowledge him when I go in there! I have a similar relationship with Prince Igor when he is in full spike in the border and I have an established conifer down the garden which I think of as female...Zebrina.

I very rarely talk to my plants, except to give them helpful advice, or apologise if I've forgotten to water them or other sensible stuff like that. I wouldn't want you to think I'm the kind of loon who tells them jokes, or expects them to hold a meaningful conversation or anything. We had a Swiss Cheese plant called Sinclair. He was named after a ferry. The more I explain that one the worse it sounds, so I'll just leave it there. He got too big for the house, so he now lives somewhere else. I do say 'hello' to him when I see him.
Whether you think you can do a thing, or think you cannot, you are right.

I don't give my plants names they already have enough names to remember, but I do announce my arrival when i go into the greenhouse, you know good morning afternoon etc..but then i do the same if I go to let the chickens out in a morning.

I say 'grow you bustards' which works very well and confuses any nearby ornithologists.

Good one Boggy I've never given any of the plants any names or talked to them, but I do talk to the cabbage white caterpillars as I'm picking them off the brassicas just before they get lobbed into the pond

I don't name my plants either, for the same reason as digger - they already have names - but I do talk to them. Nothing exciting, mind, I just say 'Hello plants' or 'Grow!'. They do grow so maybe they listen. With indoor and outdoor plants, I often run my hands along their leaves to see how they feel and I've found that getting used to the feel of a plant's foliage helps me to judge their health. I suppose it's a bit like stroking a dog's fur to check for silkiness or touching his nose to see that it's moist.

I dont talk to my plants as such either. But when in the greenhouse potting up cuttings or when sowing seeds I do wish them luck - coz they are gonna need it with me looking after them !!

I did once catch my young son talking to the strawberry plants, he saw a big fruit that wasn't quite ripe enough and he said "I'll be back to eat you later"

I talk to mine too - I've heard it makes them grow (that's my excuse anyway). Although I can hear the family laughing behind their hands when I apologise for pruning them What I like about plants is they can't answer back, unlike my teenagers.

I always talk to the flowers. They speak are able to listen and perceive the information. And still I use such fertilizer for them as charcoal. Very useful product for soil and plants

I consider, that it is necessary to talk to plants, it is useful for their development and flowering. They are influenced very much by surrounding conditions.

I must admit to talking to my plants too - though if I think a neighbour has overheard I'll just pretend to be talking to one of my cats...(Depends what I'm saying of course, don't think the neighbours will be impressed if I'm apparently promising to water a cat!) Some day this will backfire. Realising that I've been overheard chatting away to my plants, I'll address them as 'Puss-Puss' but at that very moment all three of my cats will be sitting in the neighbours' garden!
I usually talk to the plants overwintering in the greenhouse because they really need the encouragement. I think that's quite OK - so long as they don't reply!
BTW, I'm new here - just joined, so it's nice to 'meet' you all.
