I am growing strawberries for the first time and wonder now long they take to ripen once the berry has formed.  I have had berries for the past couple of weeks, but they are still very green with no sign of them ripening.

They are being grown in a large planter and are sited in full sun for most of the day (well when the sun bothers to come out that is).  They are watered daily unless it has rained and I have been feeding them with tomato food every 10 days.

I am looking forward to eating my very own strawberries, but am beginning to wonder if I will ever get to taste them.

I have a few strawberry plants in a hanging basket and the fruits started forming after the flowers fell off a couple of weeks ago.  I looked at them yesterday and one was just starting to go red, a little while ago when I looked it was fully ripe so I picked it and gave it to the OH, he's managed to have one before the birds got to themSmile

I have been eating strawberries for about three weeks now, and found that the ones I had in containers in the garden, had a better crop than the ones in my greenhouse. I did use matting to keep the strawberries from touching the soil. I will only grow outdoors next year, and I will use a proper strawberry barrel.

I have six plants in two containers and have been picking the odd one or two every couple of days for about 2 weeks.  They did stay green for ages though and I worried like you did!  Once the first big one was picked the others seemed to start all of a sudden - I got my first proper bowlful last night!
