My uncle told me that putting a few small pieces of rhubarb leaves in the planting hole when transplanting brassica seedlings would control clubroot. I tried it a few times and it seemed to work.
However, I now understand that this practice is illegal as rhubarb hasn't been cleared as a garden pesticide!

Hi I don't know about the effectiveness, but I doubt if it is illegal to use it in your own garden. (Not sure though about the UK legislation). It is however a good thing to remember that potions that can be made at home are not allways safe or 'green' at all. But it would be nice to know more about the pro's and con's of these old and long lived gardening practices. They can't be all bad, not having killed off all our ancestors.....

I don't think anyone is going to arrest you for using rhubarb. The stalks are, after all, a natural and edible plant with centuries of safe ingestion behind them.
The 'illegal' rule applies to manufactured products and compounds which have not been tested to certain standards. As this is a very expensive process in a highly competitive market, most manufacturers have withdrawn the products rather than risk their finances - a jolly good thing too as it will be better for the environment in the long run.
