Sorry, but I've misled you. According to my friend, cutting off the shoot and allowing the plant to carry on growing would result in a 'solo' bulb. The shoot is discarded. I realise this is contrary to your view that it is a different type of garlic, but as I don't know any better, I'm going to try it out and see.

The bulbils I've harvested are similar to the ones pictured on this link. Another observation is that my 'solo' bulbs were all from soft neck garlic. None of the stiff necked ones were solo. http://www.garlicfarm.ca/garlic-bulbils.htm

Been out of circulation for a while, so apologies for no replies.

Whilst its interesting that propagation can be from main shoot.....as its single bulb I'm a bit stumped as to how it can multiply.....hence my assumption it's from seed.

Waiting for local LIDL to stock.

Have to say I'm intrigued by this...never thought a gardening subject could be quite so opaque!

Lidl have the single clove garlic at the moment - in little baskets. At least they do in Stanmore, London.

Hi, I am new to posting here so please bear with me. I emailed a friend (who is from China) about 'Solo' garlic and he said that to get them, one has to cut the emerging shoot off once, early in it's growth.

I am interested in this topic because 20% of my garlic were solo this year and I couldn't work out what happened to cause this. I had read that if they don't have a cold spell, they sometimes turn out 'solo', but as they had a cold spell over winter - I thought there must be another reason. I do however remember a dump of snow over them for about 2 weeks, which may have caused the stems to be bent over/'broken'.

BTW, my garlic has bulbils, what do the seeds look like?

Thanks Linda....it may be that the only way I'll get the seed is to plant a LIDL bulb and harvest it. Hopefully it will be repeated in our local store.Somewhere I have a net address for a garlic farm on the Isle of Wight. I'll give them a try.

Strange that there are myriads of Chinese exporters of bulbs but then the trail goes dead!

Sorry don't have seed but our local Lidl, in Hadleigh Essex, are selling off baskets of these garlic that contain about a dozen bulbs,reduced from 99p to 69p (I THINK, can't find receipt)

Its frustrating but I've found a huge number of Chinese exporters of the bulb which they describe as "single bulb garlic" or more commonly "solo garlic".....not a Latin name in sight!

Could it be the "Elephant Garlic", which sounds very similar to your description, but is not really a garlic, if so T&M were selling it about 2 years ago, maybe the Garlic farm on the IOW can assist, they do supply bulbs for growing, I use them most years for our crop.

Last year either LIDL or ALDI were selling single clove garlic. It is a single bulb, no clovelets, about one and a quarter inches in diameter. Unfortunately they have [temporarily] stopped selling it.

I researched a source on the internet and could find no reference other than major Chinese exporters of product, not seed. It seems it can only be grown from seed. There is an erroneous view on blogs that this garlic is an aberrant variation of 'standard' garlic. Not so.

It's a longshot but if anyone has seed I'd be very appreciative to get some.
