little nibbling bunny, at last I believe I can give you an id. for your mystery tree/shrub. Your pics were really excellent and enabled me to zoom in for a close look.

It looks like Caragana arborescens Lorbergii

The leaves are pinnate and it has pea like flowers.

Hello Silver Surfer,

The general form / growth of the tree led me to suppose Salix may be a possible. The second photo has not detail enough to comment on whether we see individual leaves (each with a bud) or, leaflets and so probably pinnate leaves.

More info. on catkins / flowers would be very helpful here, when tree flowers, what colour flowers, if scented?

Well, I don't want to bore the less Botanic readers.

Tony. ...Botanic Tone, I found your suggestion of Salix for 1. and 2. very interesting. I thought looking at the pics that the leaves were pinnate. I can think of no pinnate Salix.

Another thought regarding tree in pics. 1& 2: are there any thorns / spines on the branches?

What is your location, are you in UK?

Pic. 5 is a Doronicum (commonly called leopard's bane - I believe) haviny many single-stemmed yellow daisy-like flowers.

Pics. 1 & 2, looks like a willow (Salix sp.), of which there are very many! Does the tree have catkins in spring?

little nibbling bunny , I have tried very hard to id your tree, sadly with no luck!!!

It is really annoying me, as the leaves are so distinctive.

PLEASE will you come back, praps in the spring, when it flowers, and post some close ups.

I would dearly love to get a name put to it, if not by me, someone else must be able to id it.

Here you go... some have these soft feathery and them some of the bumps have nothing on them at all. As I said the birds seem pretty interested in these tree and I have seem them pecking away at the bumps.

Thank you for you reply . It is not a larch. In pic 1. you can see all the bumps, that you have noticed, however these do not show up on pic 2. This is what puzzled me. To try and help you, I would be very grateful if you would take another pic of these bumps. Wonder if they are buds or fruit/seeds, especially as you say the birds are interested in them.Thanks.

Hello

Yes 1 and 2 are the same tree, I thought I would do a close up of on of the branches and I took the photos mid last week. I thought it might be a Larch? Also some of the older branches have these little brown bumps on them where it looks there might have been cones and the birds seem to be pretty interested in them.

Thanks for all the help- this is a really friendly forum :o)

In the morning I will take some close ups of them all and then re-organise the pics on the post. I haven't smelled any of the leaves or anything like that as it never crossed my mind at all lol! I will have a good poke about though tomorrow and report back then
