WE HAVE BEEN SUJECTED TO CONTINUAL ROADWORKS BECAUSE THE VILLAGE WOULD GET MORE POINTS IF THERE WERE NO OVERHEAD WIRES.THIS HAS RESULTED IN A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS OF BUSINESSES......SOMETIMES AS MUCH AS 50 PERCENT......THE KNOCK ON EFFECT OF THIS IS STAFF REDUNDANCIES....FAMILIES HAVING TO RELY ON THE STATE, AND AT THIS TIME OF RECESSION IT IS PARTICULARY GALLING TO BE CLAIMING BENEFITS WHEN THE COUNCIL ARE SPENDING MONEY....(£9000.00 IN ONE INSTANT ON UPSIDE DOWN TREES.....YES THAT IS ACTUALLY TRUE) ON FLOWERS AND THINGS WHICH ARE REALLY DAMAGING TO THE COMMUNITY.

I REALISE THAT THIS IS NOT THE AIM OF THE BRITAIN IN BLOOM AWARD SYSTEM BUT I DO THINK THAT THEY SHOULD BEAR SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITY.

We have just started (since Oct) clearing and replanting an area of a local park owned by the District Council. We have tried to involve local residents associations, who have done wonders with litter picking and graffitti clearing, but the area we are working on has health and safety risks as it is very steep, so there are large sectors of the community who can't help because it's not physically possible for them to do so (the elderly and children) We have a blog to tell everyone what we're doing and to ask for plant donations etc but I would like to know if anyone has suggestions about how can we involve them more?

Also the slope is south facing and under trees. There is no water on site. We have huge problems with bindweed and planting through a maze of tree roots. Any helpful suggestions for making life easier?

The plants (shrubs and herbacious perennials) we have chosen will hopefully cope reasonably well with the above conditions, but we would love to add a splash of bedding colour for July. Any suggestions for things that might survive a once weekly watering?
