Raspberry cultivars' cropping periods overlap, but if you have chsoen wisely their peaks should be consecutive. Given the poor returns in this their first year the peaks might hard to discern. Howvever, with but 5 canes per cultivar you may never have a big flush of raspeberries and you might have to freeze them to accumulate a sufficient quantity for jamming - expect about 1-1.5kg per metre of row over a period of a couple of weeks when in full crop and if competantly grown.

This year after waiting three years, my early raspberries were gorgeous and prolific and we are now waiting for the autumn crop to come good.

We had to wait three years for our red and black currants to do anything special and the Black Satin black berries, after four years are superb.

In all cases well worth the wait but our automatic sprinkler system is a must for the regular watering it gives.

Someone I know made ice cream with her raspberries and it was about the best ice cream I've ever had.

Thank you for replying. I hope this is what is happening, they were new last year. It was a huge move for me, as I cannot garden as I would like and must make the garden into something I can manage so I converted half my vegetable beds into an area for soft fruit with raspberries, loganberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries, etc.

One of the bonuses of this little blip is that I can do a direct taste comparison! It is amazing the difference in taste, size, firmness, and therefore suitability for different recipes and cooking methods that I am now able to make.

If these are newly planted canes (within the last year) then I expect it's just that they've not settled down yet.

I have four varieties of raspberries, carefully selected and planned to give me a 4 to 5 month long fruiting season. Aside from a few weather~related issues (such as accidental pruning by the wind!) they are not cropping anything like as heavily as anticipated, but more worryingly, all four varieties are cropping together and right now. Out of 20 canes (5 of each variety) I am harvesting only a small cupful every other day.

Obviously, I am very disappointed having planned a jam making session and to be eating fresh raspberries every day. Am I expecting too much? Does anyone have any idea as to why 3 of the 4 varieties are cropping out of sync?
