Have you given a thought to Bamboo. It's attractive, evergreen easily managed and doesn't send out the wrong message. Just a thought.

The only strong winds come from the NW.

Sun for the morning (from about 9:am) and until mid afternoon when would be in shade.

A friend mentioned a Cotoneaster Cornubia, but this appears to be more of a shrub, althought could grow high.

Thank you...Adam

Re: Evergreen Small / Medium Tree Options

A few more to think about:

Photinia and Bay are both evergreen (Bay can grow quite large, but not too quickly).

Pyrus Salicifolio isn't evergreen, but has very dense branches, so should still provide a reasonable screen in winter. The leaves are a very pretty silvery colour and it has a nice shape.

They all might naturally branch out below normal fence level, but you can certainly prune them so the branches only spread higher up (all three are in my very small garden, and you can walk under all of them).

It would help people rule things out/in if you could say a bit more about the conditions where you want to plant. Is it near a fence/wall/hedge (sounds like yes but would be good to know which)? Is it sheltered from winds/sun by any buildings (and if so from what direction)? And do you know what the soil is like?

Evergreen Small / Medium Tree Options

I have read with interest the article on small trees, but was looking for avice on three trees I would like to purchase.

Ideally they should be about twice to three times the height of a typical garden fence. I would like them to be evergreen to provide screening from one window that now completely overlooks my garden. There were previously a row of trees in my neighbours garden that have been removed.

I can see that there are many good decidious trees. I certainly would consider these. Certainly I would need at least one being evergreen. This one should be quite dense to provide screening and start to branch out at the top of a normal fence.

Quick growing tall shrubs may be an option, but i already have a row of shrubs near the fence.

Some I have started to consider are:

Crataegus Laevigata ‘Paul’s Scarlet’

Cornus Kousa var. Chinensis

Malus Floribunda

Ligustrum Lucidum (Chinese Privet)

Any advice or guideance would be appreciated.

Thank you Adam.
