Thanks for your comment, Mike, and hurrah for digital cameras. It must have been real thrill to come across that violet meadow. Did you shriek? I would have done. digger, I've copied some photo instructions from ages ago. They were written for someone else so may seem rather simplistic, but maybe someone else can use them as well: Go to http://i7.photobucket.com/ and register (there are instructions to follow). When that's done, you can start uploading your photos. On the photobucket site, click on the 'choose' button and a window will open showing the files on your computer. Browse to wherever you keep your photos (could be My Documents or in a folder you've made yourself), select one that you want to upload and select it. The name and location of the photo will show in the box next to the 'choose' button. Next click on 'submit'. Depending on the size of the file, it may take a minute or so to upload. When it's done, you'll see a small version of your picture and three options for an address underneath it: 'url', 'tag' and 'img'. For this forum, you need to choose 'tag', so select all the text in the box next to that word and copy it (click in the box and the text turns blue, right click and select 'copy'). Paste it into your post (right click and select 'paste'). Your photo should appear when you submit your message.

I think we'd best continue this elsewhere - Graham won't be pleased to see too much off-topic posting in his Encyclopaedia Feedback thread - he's a busy man, though patient and courteous, and I would not want to be responsible for interrupting his good work :) New Viola thread - http://www.rhs.org.uk/ibb/posts.aspx?postID=8102

Thanks Mike... A good idea to move the thread as it became more focused on violas. I've been away promoting the encyclopedia in Washington DC and in New York and also had a few days holiday. I'm back now and will be contributing here when I can. BTW... today I noticed a box saying I had three private messages - it was at the end of about 30cm of empty white space (so I'd never noticed it before). I clicked the box and it vanished! I'm checking with the webmaster to see what's going on... if anyone needs to email me privately (until I find out what's going wrong) please either use the Feedback form at rhsperennials.co.uk or perennials@grahamrice.com.

Hi Graham good to see you back at the board regarding the private message once you are logged in go to the very top of the page and you will see an icon marked member click on this and it will take you into your membership page where you should find the messages, but this has happened to nearly everyone so far we call them phantom messages because we click the box and it disappears and no message.... Back to the encyclopedia i have made good use of the book so far how did you decide what to leave in and what you should leave out? I like the section on aquielegias i have quite a few most of which are now random hybrids but they are nice i haven't the heart to grub out the self seeders although inevitably i will have to or else run out of space.

As promised, Santa gave me a copy the RHS Encyclopedia of Perennials. I spent a good part of Christmas day looking through it with my OH's mum and his aunt, who both want a copy as well. On first perusal, it's a lovely book and one I'd recommend to anyone who is interested in plants. I first got in to perennials after reading Richard Bird's book on the subject and was pleased to see that he has contributed. It was him who really started me off in wanting to learn more about plants and he has a special place in my heart. It's good to see the increased interest in perennials - they're such versatile plants and few are really difficult to grow. I'm looking forward to a good long look through this book.

I got my copy too but haven't had much time to read it properly yet. From what I have seen it is very well written, there are loads of gorgeous pictures along with many suggestions for companion planting and I've come up with one problem - my garden just aint big enough!

So glad you like the book... I'm delighted to say that it's the top seller by miles at the Wisley bookshop.
