I am interested to know if any one has used or seen people using Japanese Weeding Knives? What do you think of them? I got one in the USA while doing an internship.interested.

Hello Rama, I hadn't come across these tools before and had to do a search. Found various Japanese weeding tools, some like a very sharp hoe (called Nejiri weeders) - is that what you meant?
They look like they'd be useful for scraping over the surface of the soil if you were working low down, but I'm not sure that they'd be good for weeds that regrow from root or stem sections (like dandelions or speedwell), and I think I'd prefer to use a hand fork for that. The council here doesn't always cut the road verges early enough in spring and we get clouds of dandelion seeds drifting into the garden some years, which all seem to germinate.
I did see an interesting tool called an 'uproot weeder' - it looks like a pair of scissors, with angled blades which are shaped so as to fit around a root, which can then be levered out of the ground. That I certainly would be interested in trying.
Saw the uproot weeder here: http://www.hidatool.com/gardenpage/weeders.html - for some reason this sytem adds gaps to URLs, so you'll need to take them out if you use the link.
Have you used your weeder much? What do you think of it?

Hello Rama
I think you may be talking about the Niwashi tool, they are great with a multitude of uses.
They also put out a tool for cutting flax

Hi, I know what you're talking about. I bought one several months ago (I'm in the US). It's my new favorite tool. It's replaced my narrow hand trowels, I use it to dig up weeds and cut roots. I've used it to divide perennials also. Can't believe I lived without one for so long.

A US relative bought me the Hori-Hori long narrow trowel one with a sharp edge one side and a serrated edge the other. http://www.kaizenbonsai.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=35&products_id=1181&osCsid=c03946b3472b5e4927887ccbfe3af185
I think it's excellent. I've used it to remove dandelion roots (when the soil is damp) and all trowel work. You may need to sharpen it occasionly if you use it a lot and want to use it as a cutting tool.
Together with a swoe it's generally all I use.
It seems more of a fashion thing in the US. I wouldn't spend £20 on it.
