Hi sue 1002, It is good that you have plenty of amphibians the other night a large frog was climbing around on my lettuce so at least they should be slug free we have had a little rain but not too much, our show is this Sunday and so i am getting busy. The chap with the yews on the other thread sounds rather worried i do hope we can help it seems a while since we have had a good "ding dong" I think the last one was with that bloke from the post office who ran like a girl from Sasha do you remember? anyway i am about to play marbles with my young son, yes i know it is after 10 at night but that's the joys of adhd. bye for now my friend.

Hi digger, I remember 'Jessie' all right, the first time he came back with a parcel afterwards he couldn't look me in the eye, then after that when he hears Sasha bark, he puts the parcel on the doorstep and has legged it to the gate before I even get to open the door, as I open the door he waves at me - what a result!

Best of luck with the show, digger - sure you'll do well if you're entering the fruits of your labours! I'd forgotten about Sue's postie. What an eejit. My gripe of the moment is the TV licensing people. We haven't had a tv since 1992 (and don't miss it) but, however many times we tell them that, they keep harassing us with threatening letters. I very much resent that the BBC continue to menace us in this way, that they are all but accusing us of fraud and that they think they can search our home. They call it 'co-operation', I call it harassment. Cross, very cross.

Hi all, the thing that is getting us at the moment is car parking on the road outside. A new family moved in a few weeks ago with more than one car, they have their own driveway but never use it, OH gets cross when he can't park outside our house because one of theirs is there. Perhaps he should bring his lorry home with a 40ft container on it and leave it outside theirs and see how they like it! Sasha's walk this morning was the shortest one in history, a couple of doors down has a cherry tree which overhangs the footpath and they don't clear up the fallen ones. We were walking past when she yelped and lifted her leg off the floor. I looked and could see she was being stung by a wasp so took my shoe off and brushed it away. She was uncomfortable so took her home straight away and kept an eye on her. Luckily there is no swelling and she has stopped gnawing at it so no trip to the vet is needed.

Hi Miranda and Sue1002, I hope sasha is ok when Richard was stung it was on a sunday he very ill very quickly and i had to call the vet out, luckily he an injection in time but he had big lumps all over him and he was panting heavily I was very worried but now we have some tablets on hand in case something similar happens. Miranda you can do something about the threatening letters you are receiving it is damned annoying and damned presumptuous of the BBC to send you these unsolicited threats, if you write to them and threaten legal action for harrasment they should take notice, obviously they presume that every house in the UK has a tv they really are carrying on in a disgusting manner i hope they leave you alone Miranda. thanks for the good wishes i shall do my utmost to win something this sunday. bye for now my friends.

That must have been scary when Richard got stung, digger! How horrible for you both. Best of luck to both you and Sammy with your gardens. Sure you'll do well! As for the TV people, we'll be writing to our MP...

Hi all, spending lots of time trying to get ready for the show on Sunday my onions for the as grown section are looking ok and so are the french beans but the runner beans are looking awful they are a real mess and they are "stenner" so they should be good but they aren't.i have some good cauliflowers so thats something to be pleased about but the only consolation is that my fellow competitors have had a similar season to me so they should be in the same boat.. bye for now my friends.

Hi, Digger, Sue and Miranda & other friends-Thinking of you on Sunday-Digger -Good luck and do let us know how you get on at the show. I think everyone has had problems with the Runner Beans this year, I have problems with everything every year, but learning through the Board!!! All I have left now are about 2dozen leeks which I hope will be alright sometime for harvesting over November/December time. The cat/cats are now using the vegetable patch quite alot now to my disgust so I have dug the soil over and drenched it in Jeyes Fluid (but dont tell the EEC) and put alot of sticks and pea-netting around to try to deter them.I also have a water-gun handy but am not as quick as I would like to be. Any other ideas? The nights are getting shorter now and there is an Autuminal (sp?) feel in the air. The annuals seem to be past their best now but may get another couple of weeks of flowers.then it will be Bulbs and Spring planting- but not for awhile yet. I have put Pravodo Vine Weevil Killer on the Fushias/ and other container plants, and hope I dont find them when re-potting in the Spring. Bye for now- Fushia/Sammy

Fushia, we were just saying last night that it felt autumnal - it was cool, windy and raining and didn't feel summery at all. Compare it to a couple of weeks ago - doesn't it change quickly. For the cats, we kept the prunings of our spikiest plants and put them down where the cats were being a nuisance and that seemed to help a bit. Having a dog about the place is handy. When we had Toby, he kept the cats out of the garden. Whilst I wouldn't hurt one, and he wouldn't have done either, there was a particular satisfaction in seeing them run away as he rushed up to them, barking his head off.

Hi all, its been overcast here the last few days but today is looking better, the sun is out but a bit breezy in the wind. Am going to tidy up the front garden in a bit. I tried 'pepper dust' to deter cats, it stopped them for a few days that was all. I think you have to keep reapplying it for lasting effects tho. T&M do some 'scardy cat' coleus which are supposed to deter cats, has anyone tried them? if so do they work? I was thinking about trying some. Good luck digger for Sunday, hope you win.

Hi all ,thanks for all your good wishes for the show i shall do my best to win something. The feeling here is definately autumnal and we had to light the fire today for the first time in ages, tonight is very cool and if the weather keeps cooling down i shall have to dig out the heater for the chicken shed. today i had the RHS on the telephone doing a survey about attracting families into the society they asked all about my young son and what i thought would interest him they are considering a family membership or a stand alone childrens membership which i thought was quite good, anyway they wanted to know my age which is the first time i have been asked since turning into a fogey and 40 does sound quite old when you are not used to saying it. any way i shall go and try to get some sleep early before the weekend chaos arrives bye for now my friends.

Enjoy the show this weekend, digger. Hope it goes well for you! Interesting about the RHS wanting to attract more children. Distinctly cool here today, it's not like summer at all at the moment. The bedroom was a mere 17.4c this morning.
