I also remember the old bonfires we used to wrap up potatoes in tin foil (I think we used to call it 'silver paper' then) and poke them in the bonfire with a stick to cook. Great fun-we were always playing up the mountain, building cabins, climbing trees and cooking beans!

I joined a website some time ago in the USA called 'thriftyfun' there are some great tips on there about all sorts of things. Here is one that I thought would be useful to gardeners/ birdlovers-it shows how someone made a bird house from an old lace up boot:-

I remember the bonfires as a child too but they were always at friend's houses rather than at our own.

I like that birdhouse Richard, it looks like a nice warm place for birds to rear a family.

Yes Sue I thought it was good idea too and  a way to use  an old boot rather than throwing it in the bin. You could probably make two as they usually come in pairs anyway don't they. Perhaps you could keep one and give the other one as a nice Christmas present!  I don't think OH would be very excited though if I gave her one as a Christmas present! Big Smile

Nice picture of red chillies BB on Flickr- will you be using them on the weekend in your cooking? mine is still green (notice I use 'singular' vocabulary!)

That's an ingenious idea Richard - ref the boot. Presumably birds don't have a very good sense of smell?Big Smile

My son claims the chilli's to be his own, since he actually placed the seeds into the compost last Spring.(Well what else is there to do?) He is therefore going to make a chilli dip with the ripe one's and hopefully I can have the remainder!  Your solitary chilli will taste every bit as nice as anyone elses and may be the start of a champion chilli grower of 2010. You never know.Wink

Yes BB we have eaten one of our  chillies last week so there's one left. It looks as though you have yours growing outside in  the form of a bush or did you take it out to photograph it?

That plant has been outside since May but I put it in the mini greenhouse at the beginning of September to try and hasten the ripening. Quite a lot of the chillies are red now, so I lifted it out to take a couple of photo's this afternoon while the sun was shining.

We will have some new varieties to try next year Richard, thanks to Sue.Yes

How are you getting on with the clearing and tidying ready for tomorrow?

Its looking much better now BB if I say so myself. I still have a few bits to go up the attic but I'll wait until they are all back tomorrow just in case I fall off the ladder or something silly as I am here on my own until tomorrow tea time.I will put the things up the attic on Monday I expectSmile

I don't know where we are going to put all the things that OH is bringing back though I expect we'll find room somewhere!

Well done Richard. It sounds like a job well done. Have a lazy day tomorrow and enjoy the peace as you will no doubt, be busy when the family get back.Smile

I'm off to my bed now as my eyes are closing of their own accord. Sleep

Hi all - you will be refreshed now  BB ready for another day. I will be getting the vacuum cleaner and duster and going around to spruce it up a bit here. It doesn't seem quite so cold here, although I've only been out to take some bread out for the birds, but it is a bit grey.

Hi all, it's a little grey here too but it looks like it's trying to brighten up.

Hi All, it is a nice bright start here and the sun keeps breaking through. I have been tidying the front garden this morning and have re-planted my front hanging basket and the pot beside the front door as well as getting the leaves up and finding a home for the newly delivered wheelie-bin (garage). I must admit I'm a bit nervous about moving stuff into/out of/ or around in the garage as it is very much OH domain. I couldn't find anywhere else to put it though!!

Now I just have the back garden to do!!!Surprise

I wonder why you lose posts Phot's and Richard? Maybe that's why admin are carrying out some maintainance on Mon?

It could be BB.Sounds like you're having fun in the garden doing all those jobs no doubt with a little help from Dog.

I have a spare glass recycling bin, I filled it with compost and it has been home to my courgette plant throughout the summer. If you still have your old wheelie bin BB  you can grow some potatoes in there next year!, or cut holes in the sides and grow some strawberries in there -you can wheel it around then to be always facing the sun.Smile

Enjoy yourself in the back garden BB, and I'll check up on progress later to make sure you're not slacking.Wink

I've been out in the front garden sweeping up the leaves, and throwing them back over the fence by the tree. I can't collect any more leaves as my compost bin is full of runner bean plants now!

Hopefully these are the garden pictures I took today.
