Hi ,I don't get involved at all with the show anymore sue1002, but if the members sacked the current committee I would be happy to return, Andy has done well he has a little pain every now and then and he has to se the specialist one more time, he walks with a limp but that's life. I have another couple of shows to choose from yet, the cauliflowers are an f1 called "concept" one did come up blind? no idea why but we let the rabbits eat it.

What cauli are you trialing Digger? Mine are under the nets but don't seem to be faring very well at all, unlike the cabbages which went mental - I've got loads blanched in the freezer and still some in the ground! Has that mare still not had her foal yet???

The recipe for the courgette cake sounds very interesting Roundelder - I think Sue1002 and Anenome are the real cake makers amongst us - I go more for savoury stuff!

Lovely lilies BB and Missy is adorable, a very loyal look about her.

Seems like we all have children arriving - I just wish my daughter was moving in permanently - I'll just have to settle for her weeks hol with us - its better than nothing! She's coming up this Friday for a week. I'm hoping to do a big barbie next Thursday, and have some friends and neighbours round. I just hope the weather changes, its heavy drizzle today, but clammy.

Really sorry to hear about Richard, Digger. You can know that it is the right time for him, but it doesn't stop you missing him.

I've been "listening in" for the past few days, but no time to post. I'm always in late from work on Mondays and Tuesdays, then we are off to Sidmouth festival tomorrow, so are busy packing all the camping gear.  Now we have to take the electric wheelchair for my daughter as well as a manual we will have to take two cars this year.  So, that gives us the excuse to take even more stuff!

So, I'm going to stop the automatic emails for the next week and a half - speak to you when I am back.

Hi all, Have a good time at the festival bigsusan55, I hope your barbie goes without a hitch susiq, the concept cauliflower is not readily available yet but it certainly looks like a cracker, we'll have to see how it fares on the bench, then I'll know for sure if it's good. My cabbages are brigadier another show variety but good eating as well, in the past I have had rotten luck with cauliflowers either blowing, or rotting in the centre, head not tight enough etc.. after my disapointment with the leeks I am quite excited about the cauliflowers, I'll take some pics next time I'm up there, there is still some seed available but in a couple of years it will be easier to get hold of.

Did you manage to salvage any of the leeks Digger? you are certainly doing well with the other stuff.  My caulis didn't do well at all, only a couple made it as far as planting out and both had their stems eaten through.

Have a lovely time at the festival Big Susan, I hope the facilities are better for your daughter compared to the last one she went to.

I hope the weather is good for your daughter's visit Susiq, will she be keeping an eye on Percy again so you can get bits done in the garden?

After all that talk on sweet stuff, those gingernuts of Miranda's last week are still on my mind so I think I'll make some of those this afternoon and see if my son wants to help.

Hi all, I've just got in from work and have been reading through today's posts. Digger I'm really sorry to hear about Richard. I think planting a shrub in his memory is a great idea though.

It is absolutely chucking it down here - really heavy, persistent stuff which I find pretty depressing since I wanted to pull out the mangetout today. I dont know , it feels like you wait for ages in the winter for spring and summer and then July comes and it just pours. I think this is 3 years in a row. Rogerbee - I'm not surprised so many people are online!! Here's hoping for a better August.

Hi all, Yes BB it's three wet summers in a row, I'm wishing for another 1976 type of summer but it won't happen.

1866 users online when I just looked, I don't think I've seen that many at one time either.

That summer of 76 was far too hot for me, from what I do remember about it, my dad grew huge beefsteak tomatoes that year which I was taking into school to eat at breaktime, lots of other children were impressed by the size of them that they offered me their apples and oranges as a swap for the toms.

It's typical school holiday weather, for the last few years in their long break has seemed to follow a pattern of one week of good weather followed by a week of rain.  This year so far, we've had about equal of each.  This morning's rain has all gone, we now have clear blue skies and the wind is picking up.

AAHHH the summer of 76 - now we're cooking!!! I remember it SO wellBig Smile Looking forward to seeing those cauli's widely available if your results are anything to go by. Like Sue, mine were a disaster last year (completely slugged out) and this year I actually did get to the planting out stage, but they seem to be withering before they've had a chance to do anything?!

Hope you have a grand time Bigsusan and the weather improves for you at the festival.

Yes Sue1002, I'm hoping my daughter will spend a lot of time keeping 'Percy the Pest' occupied! Portia finally turned on him the other day, she's put up with a lot of hassle from him, but he limped for a few hours and was very subdued - so I was panicking and kept checking him over. Next day you would think nothing had happened - back to his annoying (for Portia) bouncy/bitey self!!!

Ah, poor Percy but has he caught the knack of only limping when you're looking Susiq?  It doesn't take long for dogs to work out that oneSmile  Sasha was the same when we first got her, she would keep picking on Sam and has he hadn't really got the energy to fight back, he would take himself off upstairs out of the way.

My son is keeping himself occupied but gets bored easily when it's wet.  Most holidays he goes to the library down the road where they put on activities for the kids but it's being refurbed at the moment and doesn't open again until next week.  He didn't want to help making the gingernuts earlier on but he's had a good go a testing them.

My son's gone to OH's sisters for a few days, OH took him over a couple of hours ago, he will play with his cousin whilst he's there. we don't have lots of things here for youngsters but each week on wednesday nights a bus from the town comes up to the top of the hill, they have games stations on there and videos music etc.. the bus isn't here for this week though because it wakes weeks. OH once went to the bus to see what the kids were doing, they were dangling out of the windows sitting in the drivers seat, tooting the horn and generally bu****ing about, in August the children are going to Alton towers for a day out,it's organised by the county who run the buses out to rural areas. With our son having special needs it's sometimes difficult to plan too far ahead because he changes his mind about things very quickly, but he likes going to the bus during the week especially when it a school night because he stays up late, the bus comes all year round once a week. Now he's at OH's sisters with his cousin she will take him to places where there are lots of her friends to play with. So it's just me and the OH and the dogs at home for a few days now. OH is going back to see the mare later it still hasn't blasted foaled yet, what a palava
