Hi all, Cecil is settling in well I put another pic in a week or so when he grows more. Last night was windy and stormy, but we had no damage, I've potted up the two plants that Mrs. Croc kindly sent me, I am quite looking forward to seeing the flowers, Has anyone got questions ready for the RHS on the 20th? I have a good question to ask and I've done some research to go with it, I'll not spoil the surprise by saying what it is, but it's a good question that they will enjoy answering, it not a criticism like the current question is, I wonder if Ventnor will ask a question about the "Dirty dozen" "hardcore" members that "dominate" the forum?

In answer to your last question digger, I dunno.  I read that thread and just can't make out who the "dirty dozen" are as at the time that was mentioned, there were only 4 or 5 of us regularly contributing to the board answering questions back then, as the board was so quiet.  Obviously both yourself and myself are included in that number and it would be nice to find out what we were being accused of, perhaps it related to some of the posts where we made amusing comments or what, I don't know.

I don't think I have any questions for the 20th myself but I'm intrigued as to what yours is, guess we'll have to waitSmile

Yes I'm certain that ventnors "ranting" was aimed at us if you look around to find the top twelve posters Bogweevil is in there as well, but then Ventnor did say he was going to meet Bogweevil? I do remember asking admin about our idle chat thread and they said they were happy with it and it was the kind of thing they liked to see, I think something got "lost" in the translation when someone did a spam post and some people pointed it out, now is a thread where they aren't mentioning armillatox? why because they think they will be harrased? somehow or other  some people think that they will be derided for mentioning a website or product by name? I haven't seen this but I have seen some obvious adverts for certain websites, I like to mention products, Jeyes Fluid, Armillatox, Cheshunt compound,Bordeux mixture,Baby Bio, Humax compost etc... and websites are good to mention, The NVS, Harrod Horticultural, Two wests and elliot and crocus to name a few. I think some people are frightened because they may be accused of spam when they are merely recommending a product or website, and maybe Ventnor has got his/her knickers in a twist over this? the only vaguely smutty post i could remember was from Fillipo Lippi some long time ago, He said "there was lots of banging and crashing last night, but I only got a couple of inches in my butt" now if you didn't know he was talking about a thunder storm filling his water butt with rain water, and you had a dirty mind full of unmentionables you could mis interpret the quite innocent post from Fillipo

I remember that post from Fillipo digger, made me laugh too.Big Smile  The only other one that could be called 'smutty' that I can think of offhand is when we've talked about peeing in the compost and you made some comment about hedgehogs.

Hi. Just to let those who asked to know, I got electricity into my Greenhouse this afternoon. It turned out to be a job and a half and I can't say I really enjoy electrical jobs, but the result is much more exciting: two waterproofed, well secured sockets waiting to be used. Got my hands a bit mucky today making sure the external base of the greenhouse was as air-tight as possible. I brought a lamp from the house to show my wife how good it would look in the dark, but she clearly saw that I was showing how easy it would be for me to potter away in there after sunset. And she's so right. I'm getting the 2kw heater tomorrow morning very early and then planning to spend the day in there. I'll keep firing questions as well if that's ok. Bare Root Roses to buy over the internet. Any suggestions? Ways to convince my wife to agree to loose the front garden lawn. Any suggestions?

Hi all yes Phot's you're one of the "reprobate dirty dozen" the thread is somewhere in general gardening then fruit and veg and it's the thread vegetable growing in raised beds. Have fun,Big Smile Hi Ian, it's good that you got the electric sorted out my friend, are you going to bubblewrap the inside of the greenhouse? is your OH not into gardening that much? anyway you've come to the right place about how to double cross your Oh into getting rid of the lawn.

It all depends how long you've got timewise to wait it out, you could damage the lawn yourself whilst your OH is not there and then when she comes home, just say "ohhh dear the badgers have dug up the lawn" you can post a dummy thread on this board under the heading "Mysterious lawn damage" then write a bit saying oh my lovely lawn is ruined, then I will reply saying "OOhhhh dear it's badgers you'll never be rid of them, you will have to dig up your lawn now" show the dummy post to your missus and the jobs a good un!Yes if you don't think this will work let me know and we'll think of a different one, we can make artificial mole hills, and pretend to your OH that sewer rats will use the mole runs as well as moles, girls don't like rats so she will agree to removing the lawn for the sake of safety, or you could fail to maintain the lawn very well by making big digs and bald patches whilst you mow, and then tell your OH it's because the ground is inferior for growing grass it's too wet etc..Don't worry my friend this is a minor problem that we can easily overcome, unless your OH reads this post then we're sunk.

Ooh digger, youDevil, is that your way of getting rid of your lawn to make way for more greenhouses?

Yes Phot's, I had included youWink

Well done Ian for getting the electric into the greenhouse, there's no going back now - the greenhouse will soon be full to overflowing and you'll have the same problem as the rest of us have trying to make more room to fit things in.

I doubt very much I will be around on here over the weekend, dad's funeral is taking place tomorrow and we are out for the day on Sunday so will catch up with you all later.

Ah that's fine then my friendYes sometimes we get really stupid obvious spam on here and we sometimes deride the person who posts it, but generally we've been allowed to name websites and companies that we use and put in links and say product names, very modern nowadays is the RHS, probably some really older members who were referred to as fellows, (back in the olden days) don't see things as humorous, when we like a little light hearted fun, I don't think the "dirty dozen" have deterred people from posting, I could be wrong of course, but some members have kept this message board going for a long while and new members are always always very welcome to join in, in fact I'll bet we make fun of each other rather more often than not, it's all a bit of fun and I hope Ventnor can come back and join in,

That remark of Fillipo's passed over my head completely - does that mean I'm pure? Wink

As for the 'dirty dozen' comment, I'm quite bemused by that; it's sort of like the RHS equivalent of an ASBO. Agreed, we are light-hearted and sometimes go off-topic and josh each other, but that seems fairly normal human behaviour.

Having been in teaching, as well as having helped to get a couple of other forums going, I see it as vital that people are not kept on-topic all the time - hence 'idle chat'. Allowing people to get to know each other encourages community building, which results in a helpful and friendly atmosphere - granted, from time to time people get chatty and make fun, but I do think that this is necessary for social cohesion and for a forum to work well, you need a community. I can see that someone used to serious academia might think us puerile, but I make no apologies for being a light-hearted human.
