Hi all, Very cold and windy here today, I've been out and hoovered up some leaves from the front garden I've filled a 75 litre bag with shredded leaves. Last night was a really good experience I was a little awe struck to meet up with Medwyn but he was very nice, Humax are in league with medwyn and they use his endorsements on most of their specialty composts, they are coming back to our club to do their roadshow next year, we've not really lined up any big t.v stars yet but we have some of the NVS hierachy coming to speak to us. It would be good to get Margaret Robinson to come and speak to us next year, Robinsons are only up the road from us and she is a good speaker.

Hi Digger
Glad to hear it went well - what is Humax compost? If Medwyn is recommending it it sounds good!

Hi LovelyHelen, Humax do a range of composts, they have two multi purpose types and peat free as well as peat based. The specialty ones are dead easy to use because you don't have any messing about and you can grow them straight in the bag if you like, you can find all about them here www.humax.co.uk I agree if it's good enough for Medwyn then it's good enough for me.

Hi all, we had our first proper frost overnight and when I took Sasha out this morning, the grass over the park was white and crisp. Good job I'd got the frost tender plants already under cover.

I wonder if you got frost with being on flat lower ground? we didn't get frost but it was very cold, the heater has been coming on in the greenhouse but thankfully not for too long. I've got all my gladioli corms lifted and trimmed now ready for cleaning and storing in the shed.

We had a frost here as well - it was a lovely, clear and starry night and very crisp and cold this morning. The Humax grow bags I used were loam-based and had a lot more filling in than a lot of other bags I've used. They were heavy but we got very good crops from them.

I use humax commercial gro bags for tomatoes mixed with humax number two multi purpose compost, then I grow them in deep tubs, this year with leaving the lottie, I had no room at home so i "commandeerd" the caravan and they grew well.

It is quite flat ground here digger, we didn't have white grass at home, the gardens are pretty much enclosed, but the park being a wide open area takes longer to defrost. The motorbike OH has been restoring sailed through it's MOT this morning, he will give it a good polish before he advertises for it's new home, then he will be looking for another one to do.

Talking about pigeons ....... do you know if all brassicas have to be netted at this time of year? Sure Brussel Sprouts are too tall for their pesky pests .......?

Hello Billandben, I would err on the side of caution and net them all, I once lost a full bed of young cauliflower in the space of a leisurely lunch time!

I agree with digger, net the sprouts, you will just need to put in taller canes with the netting over the top. Susiq has asked me to post a message - I thought it seemed a bit odd that she hadn't posted for a while as she hadn't mentioned anything about going away, so I emailed her to see if everything was ok. She has rung me to let me know that she can't see very well and my email had to be read out to her. She had a mishap at the weekend and the bottle that she thought were eye drops, was in fact superglue (the stuff used for nails). She was in complete agony and went to hospital, and after having loads of anaesthetic drops put into her eye the doctor was able to remove the superglue, but when it was removed it has taken off a layer of her eyeball and uncovered the nerve endings. Needless to say she is still in agony and has different drops to use and has to go back to the hospital on Wednesday. She will be back again posting when it is comfortable enough to read the screen. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery Susiq

From left to right is first a humax sales rep, then behind him is the countries top leek specialist David Metcalfe, then Louise the humax compost girl and of course the last chap on the right is "the boss" Medwyn Williams, I have a picture or two taken with myself and Medwyn and David Metcalfe

Crikey - poor Susiq - what an awful thing to happen. I hope she has a speedy recovery.
