One thing I have been wondering about is what is meant by 'gardening'. Does it matter if you tend 2 plants or 200? I think plenty of people are intimidated by the prospect of managing a large garden or one that contains a lot of plants, but most of the people I know enjoy tending a few plants and sitting outside. Certainly in the UK most houses are designed with a small garden of sorts, which doesn't happen so often on the Continent.

I imagine that the term gardening can mean anything from pulling up a couple of weeds to cultivating an acre of ground growing anything from flowers to veg but this leaves the question when does gardening become horticulture is there a difference? is botany any different to plantsmanship? are we horticulturists or gardeners? im not sure what i regard myself as, yes i have a garden yes i do garden but do i practice horticulture? i think propagation of plants can be called horticulture. yes, i collect specimen plants does this make me a plantsman? any answers or opinions will be gratefully received

Hi Sunflower..... Gardening has changed dramatically over the last 50 years, with fruit and veg being so cheap to buy in the shops, even tho pesticide ridden. Gardening is now slabs, decking, pergolas, hard landscaping with fruit and veg taking a back seat. This is what I see in my street of twnty eight properties, there being only two of us gardening in the proper sense. The rest are B and Q mad.Nice to see, Digger, some commitment and maybe the start of change.
