There were very high winds today in the Abingdon area and I could see the Walnut tree at the end of my garden receiving a real buffeting and as the tree is very mature it worried me that branches may snap off falling on the speculative housing built with inches of my boundary.  As far as I’m concerned if any branches fell on property or people the other side of my boundary that’s their problem, I didn’t ask them to build houses on farming land.

However much as it irks me I have given thought to reducing the height of the Walnut tree by a third but I wonder if that would lead to its demise and if not what time of the year could one carry out such work.

I would get a properly qualified tree surgeon/aboriculturist to look at it and give you a written report and advice.
