Hi, I needed to move my rain water butts and also rig up some system for pumping the water. I bought an Eckman High Capacity Water Barrel Rainwater Pump which works really well but it clogged its filter when reaching the bottom of the first barrel. It appears I have a lot of sludge in there which needs cleaning out and the other two barrels are likely to be the same. I plan on adding a filter/diverter/trap in the future to alleviate the problem. My question is "is this sludge any use as a soil amendment or have I got to find another way to dispose of it?" Thanks David

I've always put the sludge from the bottom of water butts onto the compost heap. Failing that it won't hurt to put it on bare soil and then dig in when it dries out a bit.
