I have tried growing beetroot unsuccessfully for the last 3 years - plenty of green top growth but when I lift the plant there's no beetroot just roots. I didn't have space in my garden this year so tried them in large containers 1ft x 2ft or so... but still no beetroot just lots of green growth. Is my container too small or is the compost too good in nutrients? Or is it something else?

Sounds very much like too much nitrogen in the soil. They need a balanced nutrient level of nitrogen + phosphorus + potassium. Usually listed as NPK.

Thanks Growmore - I suppose I'm too late to do anything about it now? If so I'll remember that for next year, as they say if it at first you don't suceed try it a different way!

They are like carrots, they grow best in ground that hasn't been freshly manured/ fed that year.

Actually NO. Gardening/horticulture is a wonderful area of science. Take a chance, experiment. In the greenhouse or on the widow sill, go have a go sow a few seeds in pots. Perhaps the results might no be gold medal class but, go on give it a try.
