I am growing broad beans under those plastic tunnel cloches. They are doing well but are just about to reach the top of the cloche so if we get a frost the tops will touch the plastic and freeze and if I remove the cloches the same will apply. Or have I got it wrong and now that they are about 10" high is it safe to remove the cloches? Any advice??

It depends on the variety you are growing and where you are in the country.

I have grown Aqua Dulce for many years and now grow Del Monica. I have never used cloches with these varieties in either Essex or Devon and they have always come through the winter for me. They do look rather sad in very cold weather but perk up once it warms up.

Thanks Nigel - they are Super Aquadulce and I think I'll chance it and take the cloches off because they are too big to keep the cloches on anyway
