I am baffled. We have an apricot tree, about 5 years old. It was sold as a self pollinator, but has never flowered or fruited. It didnt flower tis year, as far as we could see, but there is one, rather shrivelled apricot haning off it. How can we encourage it to flower and fruit properly?

Self-pollinating fruit trees still need pollen to be transferred between the male and female parts of the flowers, so if you don't have flowers, or you have flowers but there are no pollinating insects around, then you still won't get any fruit. Apricots flower very early, often before pollinating insects get going, so bad spring weather is often a factor - but you could try hand-pollinating if necessary.  Also, avoid pruning, so that you are not accidentally removing the flower buds.
