We're in the process of cutting down a large old hawthorn tree in our rear garden. It's on a very steep site but has provided a good screen for our first floor windows until now so we would like to replace it with something a bit more compact and easy to look after. The soil is not great and it's quite an exposed spot. Any suggestions for something which will grow relatively quickly, is attractive and low maintenance? We've thought about an ornamental cherry but not sure which one to go for. Would bamboo be an option? All suggestions gratefully received.

If you want it to shield first floor windows it cant be too tiny. It would need to be a huge bamboo! Will you be able to get most of the hawthorn stump out? What about an ornamental crab apple - as pretty in spring as a cherry but with coloured fruits as well and often a bit tougher than cherries. My other favourite is Amelanchier which makes a good small tree or can be grown as a multistem shrub and seems to be quite tough here. If the thorn was happy but a bit too big the ornamental Crataegus prunifolia is nice. Blossom, berries, autumn colour and mine is compact and needs no attention at all.
