Hello – I was wondering if anyone can help me? I am helping a friend with their wedding table decorations and I agreed with them smallish lavender plants on each table would be a lovely idea. However, now that I have come to investigate this, it seems lavender is not easily available mid October – which is when their wedding is. Is this really the case? Will I definitely not get Lavender then? Or if I can where is best place to purchase it? If I can’t get Lavender – what would be a good alternative? It would need to be a plant and have purple/blue coloured flowers. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

What I would do is go to the biggest and best garden centre you know of a few days before the wedding and see what they have. Yes, it would be nerve-racking not knowing what you'll be buying but they'll have *something* to use. In my experience I've seen plants produced on an industrial scale in Holland hit the garden centres, fed to the hilt and looking great to tempt buyers. They may not last but they'll be looking good long enough to make the sale. I also suspect even the garden centre employees you might talk to now won't know what shipments will be in at certain times. The only purple plant I can think of that might be in bloom then is hardy geraniums but it may be a bit late for them.

October is totally out of season for lavender as it has long finished flowering by then. Lavender is in season now and although it is possible, though quite tricky to cheat plants to flower out of season it is not possible to start that process now. Any grower that is able to do it would have started 'treating' their plants months ago. October is bit difficult month for fresh flowers or time of the year for any 'home grown' plants and when you are after particular colour you make it double difficult. I would turn to seek advise from florist and see what they can come up with but unless there is some imports coming from abroad..you might have to settle for cut flowers.

Could you do some kind of decoration with dried lavender - I'm fairly sure you can get it on the stems and make garlands or circlets or just put it in a pot or bowl. You could enhance the purpleness with some sort of ribbon woven in or wrapped around.
