This year about half of my March sown Masterpiece Broadbeans have perfectly formed pods, that appear to show beans inside. When opened they are empty apart from vestigial beans. The presence of these leads me to suspect the beans have been pollinated. My adjacent Champion of England Peas, which produced flowers just one to two weeks later are bearing a very heavy crop. Any ideas why the Broadbean pods are empty?

I think that this is poor fertilisation . You do get tiny vestigial beans.A lot of mine are the same this year. Rubbish weather at pollination time!
For the Snark was a boojum you see

Mine were shooting up this year developing heavy fruit, but while I was still screaming 'YEAHHHHH' the blackfly came and I had no beans at all, the stems were covered in black lice! I find this very discouraging, don't know whether I'll try to grow them again. Who said that broadbeans are easy to grow?

There's a tip about pinching out the tips of broad beans to sicourage blackfly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1FIXwm6v5M Two inches equals 5cm in metric for our Austrian friend.
